A Group Therapy Manual
by Martin van den Broek & Beverley Dayus

This title is a much needed practical manual outlining the rationale and format of a head injury education therapy programme for use with groups of clients with traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Full Description:

This title is a much needed practical manual outlining the rationale and format of a head injury education therapy programme for use with groups of clients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). It is aimed at occupational therapists, speech & language therapists, nurses, psychologists, neuropsychologists and all allied professionals working in this area of rehabilitation.

The authors outline the causes and incidence of TBI as well as the cognitive, emotional and behavioural effects of brain damage. In particular, they refer to patients' needs for information and education and the problem of self-awareness following TBI.

A 12-week head injury education programme is presented, which includes photocopiable record sheets, overhead-projector masters and educational materials. The programme is sufficiently detailed to allow the user to easily implement the programme in their own clinical setting. Participants have the opportunity of engaging in group and individual activities and homework reading material is also included.

The programme covers: Introduction to TBI; Types of head injury; Cognitive problems covering memory; Attention and organising difficulties; Cognitive self-help strategies; Emotional problems and their causes; Emotional problems identifying self-help strategies; Interaction between cognitive and emotional problems; Self-help techniques.
